I have just finished reading one of the most astoundingly stupid and nasty documents ever to have landed on my desk. It consists of a letter from a law firm in Saudi Arabia, run by a man named Ahmed Zaki Yamani, to a group of newspapers in Scandinavia. I quote directly from its main paragraphs:

So that’s the stupid part—the idea that people who claim descent from a seventh-century warlord and preacher have standing to sue for hurt feelings. The nasty bit comes a few paragraphs later:

It is impossible not to notice the element of threat and menace contained in the second extract. It’s not difficult to remind Danes of the organized campaign of hysterical retribution, ranging from the burnings of embassies to the mob-killing of civilians, that followed the first publication of some mild caricatures of the prophet Mohammed in 2005. Only a little further backstory is required: In 2008, it was discovered that a cell of eager murderers was planning to kill those who authored the caricatures, and in solidarity a large number of Danish newspapers reprinted the drawings in order to express their support for freedom of speech. Then, on New Year’s 2009, a Somali fundamentalist chopped his way into the house of 74-year-old cartoonist Kurt Westergaard, who was having a sleepover with his granddaughter, and very nearly succeeded in axing them both to death. The apology for all this, however, is supposed to be forthcoming not from the aggressors and inciters but from their victims. Late last month, Copenhagen newspaper Politiken agreed to make a public apology on the terms dictated by the Yamani law firm.

Celebrating this abject decision at a triumphant press conference in Beirut last week, Yamani repeated his bizarre claim to be the lawyer for no fewer than 94,923 descendants of the outraged prophet. Again, he made one utterly absurd statement and one extremely sinister one:

Amy Bloom, author of the bestselling novel “Away,” does something very clever with the structure of her newest collection of short stories, “Where the God of Love Hangs Out.” Two novellas make up the bulk of the book, each consisting of a quartet of interconnected short stories. This works especially well on audio because the listener is given the perfect place to take a break. At the center of each novella is a couple, and each story takes place at a different point in time, with the couple at a new stage in their lives. The breaks between the stories allow you to pause and absorb Bloom’s powerful insights into the unpredictability of the human heart.Though highly recommended, this collection is uneven, as the two novellas are so well written that you have a hard time shaking them off. The four other short stories are fine, but don’t resonate at the same level. Bloom looks at love in all its forms and does so with humor, heartache, passion, compassion, tragedy, and ultimately, a clear eye. Veteran narrator Susan Ericksen has a slightly deep, malleable voice she uses to create distinct characters and convey the many emotions Bloom evokes.Amy Greene gives us a harsher look at love and the destruction that can be caused in its pursuit in “Bloodroot.” This compelling debut novel, set on a remote Appalachian mountain, takes up the violent interconnections between two families. WHAT’S wrong with Cougar Town? Not Courteney Cox. She’s
still a platinum sitcom talent. The concept isn’t bad: suddenly
single fortyish woman tries to re-enter the dating pool by drowning
small boys. Doesn’t sound like much fun when you put it that way?
We all know there’s nothing strictly wrong with having sex with men
young enough to be your son but unless Mike Nichols is directing
Dustin Hoffman in The Graduate, the material is about as
funny as cancer.

Cougar Town has another problem. Cox at fortysomething is
still better looking, better dressed, fitter and perkier than most
women in their 20s. Real women are variously lumpy, crooked, tired,
plain, fat, overworked people. Real women might be queueing at the
divorce courts if they thought the Courteney Cox makeover was
waiting for them on the other side. She has a nice home, a
half-grown nice kid, annoying friends who love her, a good job and
a very pleasant handbag. She strips down to her tiny Victoria’s
Secrets in front of a barrage of different men in the first episode
and feigns embarrassment over her ageing carcass when she looks
absolutely great. Is she the wrong cougar or are cougars just
wrong?

There should be humour to be found in the desperation of the
cougar as a breed. Let’s not judge her. Let’s just look at the
unwinnable battle against time, gravity and fertility. Setting out
in her armour of silicone, Botox, gym training, extended hair and
porcelain veneers to scope and fell some young buck in a dimly lit
bar, she should be hilarious. She’s not. She’s sad and Cox’s
cheerful cup of positive cocoa doesn’t make her appealing.

Desperate Housewives has largely avoided cougar country
since the early first series. Even then, Eva Longoria’s Gaby was
more of an adulterous young thing than a creepy old woman when she
was banging the cute gardener. This increasingly tired series
opened, soap-like, with another wedding, another betrayal, another
tantrum, flights from Adelaide to Whitsunday Coast another . . . attempted murder. These …continue reading

When it comes to total immersion in a role, Christian Bale may have a rival in 25-year-old Harry Treadaway.

In 2004, the Devon-born actor and his twin brother Luke, both then in their first year studying drama at Lamda, were cast as conjoined punk-singing siblings in the cult film Brothers of the Head.

Harry spent two months strapped to his brother to get into character, and also “lost two-and-a-half stone, so I was under eight stone, which was quite severe. But it seemed important, because those characters would have been malnourished.”

He learned the drums to play Joy Division sticksman Steve Morris in Anton Corbijn’s Control, and how to strip a car engine for his superbly understated performance as the traveller who befriends Katie Jarvis’s Mia in Andrea Arnold’s Evening Standard Award- winning film, Fish Tank.

“It’s not ‘method’,” he says, squirming slightly. “It’s partly the pleasure of the learning. But also, whoever you are playing, they feel very dear to you. You want to tell their story as truthfully as possible, bring their complexity to life. You don’t want to guess or be general. It just makes sense to me to do more work rather than less.”

For his latest role as Oswald in Iain Glen’s forthcoming West End revival of Henrik Ibsen’s Ghosts, the preparation has been cerebral rather than physical.

Oswald breaks away from his churchy upbringing to discover a world of bohemian freedom as a painter in Paris, only to be struck down by terminal syphilis inherited from the wastrel father.

Treadaway sees Oswald as hopeful and progressive as well as cursed. He has bursts of creativity as well as suicidal depressions, all attributable to his condition.

“I researched it over Christmas in Jamaica,” he says, smiling. “I’m sat on this balcony, looking out over the Caribbean, reading about syphilis and learning lines like ‘it won’t stop raining’ and ‘it’s so dark’. Sea Dragon Energy Inc. Announces a Significant Increase in Its Oil Production and the Receipt of Fin

Sea Dragon Energy Inc. (”Sea Dragon” or the “Company”) (TSX VENTURE:SDX) is pleased to announce that its current working interest share of production from the N.W. Gemsa and Kom Ombo Concessions has now reached 1,475 bopd. The Company also reports that it has received final approval for its latest acquisition of a 50% interest in the Kom Ombo block #2 Concession. The Government of Egypt has now approved the Deed of Assignment thus paving the way towards closing this acquisition.
In the N.W. Gemsa block, the Geyad #2 ST1 was placed on production on January 30th at a rate of 2,170 bopd resulting in total gross production from the concession reaching a new peak of 9,220 bopd (Sea Dragon has a 10% Working Interest). Cumulative oil production from the Al Amir SE and Geyad oil Fields has now surpassed 1.3 MMbbls. Vegas Oil and Gas are the operator with 50% Working Interest and Circle Oil Plc have 40% Working Interest.
In the Al Amir SE Field the Al Amir SE #5 well was spud on January 29th 2010. The well is estimated to reach a total depth of approximately 8,300 ft. Sub-Sea in the Rudeis Formation. The primary objective of the well is to further appraise the oil-bearing sandstones of the Kareem Formation. At time of this press release the well had already reached a depth of 2,345 ft. In Kom Ombo, significant development drilling activities are planned for the Al Baraka Field focused primarily at increasing gross production well beyond the current 1,106 bopd level (Sea Dragon has a 50% Working Interest). The newly discovered Six Hills E Formation in the Al Baraka #4 well is continuing to produce at some 750 bopd.
